Dina, a well-known children's writer once told me how much he hated checking out bookshops for his books. If there was a big pile, he'd wonder why no one was buying them. If there were none, he would never think they were sold out, but fretted that the shop wasn't stocking them. If there was just one or two he was depressed that the shop had ordered so few.
