Many things I figured would be ddifferent in a wheelchair: people making a particular effort not to talk over my head; being just the right height to press the Wait button on the traffic lights and so on, but one wheelchair effect I missed out, namely that I wear a hat to synagogue and when I lean my head back to look out from under the brim at the people desperately trying to include me in conversations, well, that perfectly fine-fitting hat (previously) now goes sliding right off the back of my head.
Enter one Pamela Savery complete with:
- the perfectly chic, perfectly on-trend colour for this season, which is also cut close enough to the scalp to disguise newly falling hair and not slip off mid-gossip.

What a totally FABULOUS hat!

Radio 4's Book of the Week is all about Selfridges. This morning's episode told the story of Harry Selfridge's glamorous lover (a French chanteuse - can't spell her name) who had to have an extra cabin on channel crossings to accommodate her hats. She was the inspiration for Cecil Beaton's designs for 'My Fair Lady'. Thought of your hat when I heard this. The glamour!

Hi Dina love the hat. Just got back from the post box myself looking very fetching in rain-hat and with accompanying wet dog. Reason for wet excursion was my inability to send money via your blog to scanner appeal so posted cheque for £50 to Mt. Vernon, hopefully having made clear to them its because of your blog and not my recent checkup. Its the singer not the song that gets me, so keep singing and hopping in and out of your wheelchair in front of startled onlookers. Best regards, Jean.

Dina - went to M&S Leicester today spoiling for a fight in case they were not stocking your book. The staff in the Lingerie Department were helpful but hadn't heard of "Take off your party dress". (Where have they been?!!!) They promised to get back to me. So on the case .........

Terrible news. Like everyone I am thinking of Anthony her husband and her children and grieving for them. A wonderful woman, generous and alive at what must have been her most exhausted and despairing. This marvellous hat - her last post - is a good expression of that vitality. Thankyou Dina. Though our loss cannot begin to compare with that of her family We will all - her virtual friends as well as those who knew her- miss her so very much. This comes with love, grief and admiration.

My deepest condolences too. Dina touched many lives, not least through the eloquence of her writing. She has also helped me offer really worthwhile support to friends suffering from this dreadful illness. Her family is in my thoughts.

Such deep sorrow. I grew to love and admire Dina so deeply, and her beautiful brave family travelling a road noone wants to have to travel. Valle Dina.
