Elon is my in-house picture books tester. A hundred or so review copies come into this house most weeks, so every night I take a pile of picture books upstairs for Elon's bed-time, and we try out the new stuff completely randomly, our only method which one he points to first. Reading aloud is the surest acid test. Tonight was good: One Witch, by Laura Leuck, illustrated by S.D.Schindler, published by Bloomsbury. A simple counting book with a ghoulish twist: it's a witch that has a pot to fill, so she collects creepy stuff from her friends along the way. Benign looking witch, satisfyingly scary friends, interesting enough to revive an old, old formula.
